Alcoholism Shrinks Your Brain

While it is widely known that drinking small to medium amount of alcohol prevents cardiovascular disease, it is also now confirmed by neurologists that drinking alcohol heavily shrinks your brain. This is according to a research that was presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 59th Annual Meeting in Boston, April 28 — May 5, 2007. The study found the more alcohol people drink on a regular basis, the lower their brain volume.

The study involved MRI scans of 1,839 people from the Framingham Offspring study, ages 34 to 88, who were classified as non-drinkers, former drinkers, low drinkers (one to seven drinks per week), moderate drinkers (eight to 14 drinks per week), or high drinkers (more than 14 drinks per week). MRI scans were performed and used to measure brain volume, which can be thought of as a measure of brain aging.

No wonder there is truth in saying that your brain gets as small as a peanut when your are drunk :) What’s more, your eyes get blurred and your decision impaired. The long term effect, as expected, could be this accelerated aging of brain cells. Imagine you’re only at your 40’s but your brain is equal to that of a 60-year old? Oh my, I’m afraid I would not drink heavily now starting tomorrow…err, I mean, today. Did my brain already shrunk? Hope not so and it’s not too late. :)
